Abstract: The Single European Market and the Treaty of Maastricht ask for a strictly unified system of economic statistics. Because statistical results play a decisive "political" role as criteria of convergence, for financial contributions to Brussels and the like, there is a need for harmonization by legal means. The creation of a harmonized system of economic statistics has several consequences for empirical analysis: Time series analysis and analysis on a disaggregated basis will be seriously affected. Some fields of research will disappear, new ones might emerge. The most relevant outcome is the change in the role of statistical results.
