Abstract: In this paper the efficient amount of self protection - safety measures to reduce the probability of an accident - is determined in the case of irreplacable commodities and compared with the case of replacable losses. The practical relevance of the theoretical results is shown by the actual problem of information safety in communication networks. After defining the demand for insurance the relationship to self-protection measures is analyzed. Finally, the practical consequences are illustrated by the restricted insurance policies for irreplacable commodities, like the personal privacy and collector’s items.
