Abstract: This index of inconsistency measures the variability of individual responses in survey results classified by size classes. The mean individual response variance is an essential quantity within the index. The underlying model requires data of a main survey and at least one repetition, the latter a simple random sample, both conducted according the same system of work G with the same key date or reference period. The individual data of units i of the sample and the corresponding data of the main survey are classified by size classes (post-stratification, twodimensional contingency table). The index is estimated for each size class, the over-all index calculated as weighted mean. Its values vary between 0 and 1.If there is no response variability it is 0, value 1 means total unreliability. With the indices of single size classes and the over-all index on hand the reliability of the data may be evaluated together with the consumer of the survey results. If necessary, the number of size classes has to be reduced or vice versa. An example of Belgian statistics shows the influence of response variability on results classified by size classes.
