Abstract:
The German „Kreislaufwirtschaftsgesetz“ (Law on the Prevention and Recycling of Waste) focuses on closing materials cycles and the product responsibility of producers. An important instrument for the regulation of product flows are repurchasing obligations. Regarding electric/ electronic scrap materials and car recycling, two liabilities are in their blueprint stages at the time being. Economic theory has just begun to analyze this thematic complex. The paper is concerned with questions of allocative efficiency within a framework of a dual waste disposal system. Applying optimal control theory it is shown, that repurchasing generates a second way of waste disposal, which is related to waste deposition in a substitutive mode.
