Abstract:
Drawing on German microdata, we estimate subsistence expenditures for households of different sizes in extended linear expenditure systems. We find that economies of scale in households’ subsistence consumption might be lower, as compared to the results of previous studies (Merz/ Faik (1995), Faik (1995)) using more restrictive estimation techniques. However, our estimated size effects prove to be by far more distinct than those inherent in the lump sum grants from the German Social Assistance System.
