Abstract: There was a discussion in the years 1964-66 in this journal about the best way to estimate growth rates. Inferential and descriptive methods were carefully carried out and discussed but the opinion of the protagonists remained different. This gap between thinking about theoretical and practically applied modelling is still of interest today. The problems of adequacy between matters and means applied is a serious problem of applied research and not fully discussed yet. The old struggle was just an opportunity to deal again seriously with these questions of main interest and to revisit them. Concerned with this debate a new method of estimating growth rates, capable of operating inferentially as well as descriptively, is carried out.
