Abstract: The intention of this paper is to find a utility function for the often used linear demand functions. The derivation of a utility function with such properties leads to a surprising result: Not only one utility function, but a class of utility functions has the required properties. It also gets clear that in a world of two goods one demand function is linear with respect to the price, and the demand for the second good is described by a convex function in the price-quantity-diagram.
