Abstract: The essay explores the linguistic studies of classical Arabic, especially its theories of phonetics and phonology. This essay spans phonetic and phonological features of Arabic, reviewing the influential works of al-Jalil Ibn Ahmad (175-791) and his disciple Sibawayh (177-793). It also studies Ibn Jinni's (392-1002) masterpiece, Sirr Sina’at Al-Ir’ab (The Secret of Forming Parsing ‘Desinential Inflections’). Abu Al-Fath ‘Uthman, who was also famous as Ibn Jinni, was an influential linguist and grammarian of Arabic. His well-known book, Sirr Sina’at Al-Ir’ab, was one of the seminal books written on phonetic and phonological theories of Arabic. Ibn Jinni created a set of rules to understand and analyze Arabic phonetics and phonology. This essay, therefore, examines Arabic phonetic studies, the procedures which are followed by Arab linguists as well as some contributions pertinent to various sounds aspects such as articulatory, auditory and acoustic.
