Left, right, or neither? Islamism as social blueprint

Mario Ferrero

Constitutional Political Economy, 2024, vol. 35, issue 4, No 3, 500-522

Abstract: Abstract Islamists have been variously seen as close to the radical Left or the radical Right. We outline the basic features of socialism, fascism, and Islamism as social blueprints and then subject them to some economic models of political change. Since socialism bifurcated into a radical and a moderate branch (communism and social democracy) whereas fascism never did, we ask if any such bifurcation can be expected of Islamism. We find that socialism could, while fascism and Islamism could not, harness the self-interest of an already existing reform sector that would drive the political transformation.
