Abstract: Abstract We study the impact of rising Chinese and Eastern European import competition and export opportunities between 2001 and 2016 on the Dutch labour market. Both the participation of China in the WTO and the extension of the European Union provide an opportunity to investigate the impact of an unanticipated increase in trade on 40 Dutch COROP regions. We do not find a robust impact of the increase in trade on local employment, wages and inequality. Results for the Netherlands and other countries can be explained by the initial composition of the employment share across industries.
