Abstract: Abstract My background as a demographer blended very well with Art Getis’s knowledge of and research in geography. He taught me what geography is and he taught me how to analyze demographic data from a spatial perspective, especially in the use of the GIS approaches he was instrumental in developing. I am like a lot of people who owe a huge debt to Professor Getis’s insight into the spatial aspects of the world around us. In this article I review the way in which he shaped and guided my own research and more generally that of spatial demography, by participating in it even as he was creating important new methods for spatially analyzing data.
