Abstract:
Abstract The political economy of innovation posits that, countries with narrow political elite tend to spend less in R&D and register low patent demand. This article sets out to verify this assertion within the framework of political leader theory; on a panel of 263 leaders in 62 countries, spanning from 1992 to 2018, using the graphical approach and the Method of Moment with multiple Fixed Effect. Results indicate that, highly educated leaders and those with an economic background enhance R&D expenditures. However, they didn’t matter for other innovations indicators including total, local and foreign pattern demand.
