Abstract: Abstract This article is the text of a presidential address given to the Society for the Development of Austrian Economics in November 2021. As economists, we are first and foremost teachers of the economic way of thinking. Great teachers have come before us and we stand on the shoulders of giants this year as we honor some of the best, thoughtful, passionate, and articulate teachers of economics: Walter Williams, Jerry Ellig, and Steve Horwitz. The true role of the economist is to provide students with the framework by which they can understand the puzzles and problems of human action. It is not to train up the next technocrats who can save us, but rather instill both intellectual humility and curiosity. Only then can the student and citizen see the future with hope and optimism. There is a substantial and unique opportunity for teachers in the Austrian tradition to change the way our students see the world.
