Abstract:
Abstract Military organization and operations have served as the inspiration for centralized planning of the economy. In particular, central economic planning theorists were interested in the common ownership, technological determinism, and resource allocation methods found in various militaries. I draw on recently declassified articles from the Soviet Union’s premiere journal of military theory, Military Thought, to demonstrate that servicemen-theorists had not solved the kinds of planning problems that advocates of central economic planning hoped they had solved, and that this calls in to question a critical source of inspiration for early central economic planning theories.
