R&D Competition and Optimal Patent Design

Abstract: Previous studies on optimal patent design calls for diflerent patent breadth-length combinations. This is because their models are based on different nature of competition in the patented product market. This paper explores other key determinants of optimal patent design. This paper shows that optimal patent design depends not only on the nature of competition in the patented product market but also on the nature of R&D technology and the degree of R&D competition.
