An Epidemic Model of the Diffusion of NOW/ATS Accounts

Abstract: This paper models the diffusion of banking and financial innovations as if they were "epidemics". The inventors of an innovation may be regarded as the source of a "disease". Potential depositors and investors may be persuaded to purchase the new commodity through interpersonal "infection" or through the mass-media. This paper captures and estimates the diffusion of NOW/ATS accounts as one example of a financial innovation by using an epidemic model. This paper also finds that the epidemic model is alive and well even after the opportunity cost of holding NOW/ATS accounts is included in the regression.
