Social Characteristics of British Businessmen, c1800-1960

Abstract: This paper is a first full-scale investigation of social characteristics of 381 leading British businessmen included in Dictionary of Scottish Business Biography through the creation of a systematic database. Two sets of characteristics are explored. One relates to personal circumstances of the businessman such as family tradition, place of birth and of business, social origins, formal education, apprenticeship, and occupational career; the other non-business aspects such as wealth and public activities. It appears that family tradition was the most basic and crucial in determining the other characteristics and that the continuing dominance of family members in management and their negative characteristics was evident.
