Abstract:
The empirical findings of this paper suggest that manufacturing industries derive substantial benefits from research and development performed in other industries. In fact, R&D spillovers tend to be more potent force behind productivity gains in the OECD manufacturing sector that the industry's own R&D activities. Inter-industry R&D spillovers are found to play a particularly important role in improving industrial productivity. In certain industries, however, international R&D spillovers may have stronger effects especially for countries more open to international trade.
