Abstract: Services have become an important and growing sector of the world economy, accounting for the largest part of value added and employment in the vast majority of developed countries. The importance of the services sector is justified by its sheer weight in the economy (around 67% of EU 25 GDP) as well as by the increasing consumption of services in the manufacturing industry, affecting the cost, price and quality of manufactured goods. Nevertheless, the differences among the Eastern-European and the EU members’countries with respect to the role and performance of the services sector, as well as the differences among different transition economies still persist. Despite the troubles, we believe that the forthcoming descriptive analysis could bring some highlights on competitiveness and the factors determining countries’ position on the services world market.
