Abstract: Using a set of well-known complexity metrics, the current paper proposes an alternative method for computing the software complexity, using the cognitive logic. An experiment is made to validate the developed metric using 640 open source classes and 8 experienced software developers. The results show a high correlation between the inheritance depth, cyclomatic complexity and cognitive complexity measurements. The proposed quantitative approach has direct applications to an issue of great concern in software projects development: effort estimation.
