Abstract:
In order to account for the more recent, data driven changes in empirical economics and business cycle research in particular, the KOF Swiss Economic Institute is setting up an entirely new time series database. In the process, the precious information which results from the long history of the KOF Swiss Economic Institute has to be respected while changing to a system that allows more transparent and reproducible data pipelines. To implement such a database and ecosystem, KOF chose well established and popular open source software: the R Language for Statistical Computing at the business layer and PostgreSQL as a relational database management system (RDBMS). The first pioneering applications of this new ecosystem are live by now and more and more are scheduled to roll out until Spring 2018. In particular applications for consumers of the KOF-Datenservice will be among the early releases and consumers will benefit from the ‘pull approach’ of the web-based REST interface.
