Abstract:
This article contains, first, an international comparison of the formation rates of new firms as well as some indicators of important activities of the new firms. Second, it presents the main results of a series of studies, which refer to the determinants of several performance measures (survival rate, profits, employment growth, innovation performance) of Swiss new firms. The data basis came from Federal Statistics Office, which identified the entire cohort of ‘green field’ firms founded in the years 1996 /97. The KOF conducted three surveys of the surviving firms in the years 2000, 2003 and 2006 (i.e. up to ten years after foundation), which provided information not only on several activities of the new firms but also detailed data on various characteristics of the single persons or teams of persons that founded these new firms.
