Abstract:
A pilot project of a dual apprenticeship has started in Nepal in autumn 2018. Apprentices usually spend one day per week in school and five days per week in a company. The introduction of a dual apprenticeship faces the challenge that the companies have no experience regarding the costs and benefits they can expect. This can prevent companies from providing apprenticeship places. In order to reduce that uncertainty, this analysis presents a projection of costs and benefits for parti-cipating companies based on a phone survey among firms. The results show that companies make a small net benefit since apprentices’ productive value is slightly larger than the accruing costs for companies. The most important cost category is apprentice wages, followed by the costs for trainers, while non-wage compensation of apprentices is relatively minor. The net benefits are larger for electrical engineering apprentices than for mechanical engineering apprentices
