Abstract: The purpose of this research is to establish the market structure of the mattress manufacturing industry of Ecuador and the relationships between the concentration, local market prices, exchange rate, and profitability variables. A simultaneous equations regression model of partial three-stage least squares (3SLS) with information of the companies with the largest market share in the sector has been used. Market concentration has been calculated using the Herfindahl-Hirschman Index. The main results show that there is an imperfect market structure and that market share affects the profitability of the oligopoly. In turn, the oligopoly fails to exercise market power due to the competitiveness in the prices of imported mattresses.
