Abstract:
Health Economics has had a remarkable growth in the last decades. In Colombia, the academic production is still incipient, with 80 percent of the literature published in national journals and undergraduate and graduate research projects during the period 1980-2002, particularly those produced as of 1993 when the national health system was reformed. This production, jointly with research projects, has been concentrated, according to Alan Williams’ classification, in the system's evaluation, planning and budgeting and monitoring mechanisms. In contrast, the issue of health markets and economical evaluation of the same has received little attention. A question such as what is health, what is its value, as well as the issue of economic evaluation of treatment is not fully answered yet. Research efforts must be oriented to these matters in the future in order to consolidate an academic community in the field of health economics in the country.
