Abstract:
Institutional analysis seeks to contribute to the construction of more comprehensive theories of social organization, recognizing the diversity and complexity of human interactions. It represents an aspiration to develop an integrative approach and constitutes the central guiding principle of this book. Institutions, Governance, and Economy responds to the need to disseminate tools for understanding and addressing collective governance problems, which have become more acute in our present era of underprovision of public goods, environmental deterioration, weakened communities, and political polarization. Adding to these challenges are the urgent demands of Latin America and the Caribbean, hindered by persistent economic inequality and a weak State. The book gathers the main concepts and institutionalist analyses, and it brings a variety of authors into dialogue whenever possible. It also offers analytical instruments to formulate and solve research and public policy issues related to the socioeconomic development of Latin America and the Caribbean.
