Abstract: Vele, vele jaren is suiker het belangrijkste exportproduct van Indonesie geweest. Na de suiker-crisis in het begin der dertiger jaren is zij van die plaats verdrongen door aardolie en rubber. Sinds 1934 concurreerd ze met tin, thee, copra en tabak om de 3e plaats, die ze in 1939 nog bezette doch in '40 aan tin moest afstaan. De betekenis der rivalen varieerd in die jaren tussen de 5 en 9% van de to tale uitvoerwaarde.
