Abstract: In the first article of this series, Dr Ralph W. Phillips, who is frequently referred to as the "Father of the International Rice Commission", gives a broad overall picture of tbe activity of FAO, witb particular reference to the work on rice improvement in its various aspects that is carried out through the International Rice Commission (hereafter referred to as tbe "Commission").
