Tjilatjap Development Prospects: An Early Report

Philip Eldridge

Economics and Finance in Indonesia, 1972, vol. 20, 28-38

Abstract: There has been some discussion in the past two years on the need for industrial estates in Indonesia as an important ingredient in efforts to promote industrial development. Some progress has been reported on government industrial estate plans in Djakarta and Surabaja, but this process has been a relatively slow one. Special interest has been created by the fact that the Tjilatjap industrial estate project, still in the preparatory stages, is predominantly a private venture. However, it is anticipated that participants in the overall development will include, directly on indirectly, foreign and Indonesian investors, the Indonesian and Australian governments and some major international financial institutions. The Tjilatjap project so derives considerable interest from the fact that it is planned not for one of the present major industrial centres of Indonesia but for a small port on the South coast of Java, which has recently attracted increasing attention as a new potential growth point for industrial development.
