Abstract: This study reports some preliminary findings of research on smallscale forms of group economic cooperation in six village of the Gmanuk river basin, West Java. The study was carried out by the author and other staff of the Agro-Economic Survey's Rural Dynamics Study, who have been studying a number of rural development problems in these villages since 1976. One aim of examining the characteristics, histories, successes and failures of these small-scale cooperative activities is to compare the results with a parallel study of larger, more formal cooperative organizations (BUUD/KUDf in the same villages.
