Abstract:
There has been considerable progress of quantitive analysis of fertility determinants. Single equation models, reduced form on structural micro-models (see, Schultz, 1973) have been applied in the anaiysis of demographic, economic and social factors which affect the rate of fertility, causing its to increase or decrease. Most of the present studies have used household data because of their easy availability. Using the household as the unit of anaiysis, fertility determinants include famiiy income, wife's earning power, length of marriage, assets owned by a famiiy, and other factors such as whether famiiy-pianning is practice 1 or not (see; Bowen-Finegan, 1969; Ben-Porath, 1973; Willis, 1973; Gronao, 1973; Encarnacion, 1974; etc.) In the present study, using data derived from Indonesia's Population Census of 1971, the effects of wife's educaticn and wife's age upon fertility are examined. Covariance analysis and a lineir model (Encarnacion, 1974) are utilized in this study.
