Abstract:
This report presents and examines the results obtained from a survey of smallholders near the manicipalities (kotamadya) of Ujung Pandang and Pare-pare in South Sulawesi. The main purpose of the survey was to present a picture of the economic structure of smallholders in the regencies (kabupaten) of Gowa and Sidenreng Rappang, the former being situated near Ujung Pandang, the latter near Pare-pare. Input-output and other data were collected in 1975 and 1976 and presented the form of simple budgets to find out the importance of enterprises to the economic life of farm family. To this end were listed districts in earch regency, in accordance to the r characteristics as irrigate semi-irrigated and non-irrigated regions. Out of each, one district was selected randomly. Similarly, two villages in each district were selected. A total sample of 25 smallholders in each regency was selected at random and allocated to the sample villages (lO smallholders per irrigated region, 7 in the non-irrigated and 8 in the semi or partially irrigated regions). The criteria for selection of the smallholders were that they should possess at least one pair of cattle or buffaloes and 0.5 half of irrigated rice field (sawah)
