Abstract:
The volume of countertrade and the number of countries imposing such conditions have increased rapidly during the last decade. The enormous debt problems have combined with significant gjobal contraction to encourage renewed attention, not only on structural changes in the world trade patterns, but also on the changes in countertrade methods itself. The growing protectionism, falling commodity prices, and developed country intrasigence towards developing countries demand for new rules to the global economic game, have added to the maturation of Third World nationalism reflected in the increased ability to negotiate "conditioned" or "tied" trade arrangements as a mean to promote the development process.
