Abstract: The population percentage share of municipalities to that of West Sumatera has totally been rather increasing every year, namely from 19.53% (1971) to 20.85% (1980) and 21.28% (1986). Nevertheless the population growth rates were not the same among municipalities. In the period of 1971-80 the net population migration of all municipalities was +0,77%) and then in the period of 1980-86 has decreased to +0,34%,. In relation to that mentioded above it can be stated that Padang Panjang municipality has been always experienced the lowest population growth among eight municipalities in West Sumatera. Furthermore this municipality was one of the four municipalities experienced negative net population migration. And its net figure was the highest compared to the others, namely minus 1,75%. That's mean Padang Panjang has experienced highest de-urbanization process compared to the other three municipalities
