Abstract:
This article reviews the economic development of Irian Jaya from both national and regional development policy perspectives. The central issue is about the financial balance between central and regional governments. According to the author, there are at least three factors which could impede Irian Jaya's economic development. First, poor infrastructure has made Irian Jaya less attractive for investment activities. Second, Provincial government ability to develop infrastructure is constrained by its own revenue. Third, Irian Jaya's economy depends on natural resources, there have been some signs of over exploitation which could endanger its sustainability, both economically and ecologically.
