Abstract:
The quality of government in contemporary democracies is fundamentally related to the politicians’ degree of responsibility, particularly in what regards the members of parliament. Their responsibility depends largely upon the voters’ leverage of influence and control, both when they cast their ballot at the polling station and during the office of the elected. In current political-legal debates the issue of responsibility is frequently associated with that of the voting system deemed to be optimal for a given society; in this respect, theorists often stress the virtues of the uninominal system and the inconveniencies of the imperative office.
