Abstract: The present study evaluates the specific ways of poetic investigation and analysis within the context of an age particularly known for its positivism. The author proposes as a case study Algernon Charles Swinburne’s outstanding example of poetic criticism, framed both as a method of comprehensive reading, and as an energetic reaction to the growing technicality of his time critical practices. Grounded on the comparison between the poet’s verdicts on Shakespeare and his peers’, the investigation directs towards the disclosure of Swinburne’s precedence in many traits that nowadays Shakespearian studies tender and bring into the open.
