Abstract: The contemporary bilateral relations between Ukraine and Hungary have been characterized by the salience of ethno-politics, as an instrument by which Hungary aims to defend the rights of the Hungarian Diaspora in the region of Transcarpathia, in western Ukraine. Following the annexation of Crimea and the outbreak of the Donbas conflict, the use of ethno-politics by the Budapest authorities has significantly increased, as Hungary pushes for ethnic-based autonomy and, more generally, attempts to increase its influence in the region.
