Abstract: The debate on working time reduction in Germany is becoming increasingly important in light of international “4-day week” trials and the experiences of the Corona pandemic. Studies show a declining trend in average working hours and a preference for shorter working times. Different models for working time reduction must be taken into account. Shorter working hours have potential health benefits, but also the risk of work intensification and productivity losses. A collective reduction in working hours seems unrealistic against the background of economic challenges, but working time models that are differentiated and employee-oriented might meet the demands of employees and allow companies to benefit from healthy and motivated employees in the long term.
