Abstract: This article evaluates the short- and long-term effects of COVID-19-related school closures on education in Germany, five years after the pandemic. Schools were closed for extended periods of time in 2020 and 2021, disrupting regular classroom learning and shifting to distance education. The analysis examines the impact on students, families, and schools using the educational production function framework. While parents at the time reported gains in self-directed learning of students, they also reported reduced participation in beneficial activities and increased screen time. Families faced heightened caregiving demands and reductions in workhours, with mixed effects on parent-child interactions. Schools adapted digital learning strategies during closures but largely reverted to pre-pandemic practices afterward. The study highlights both the resilience of stakeholders and the need for systemic educational reforms.
