Problems in the Reform of Statistical Work

Abstract: Statistical work in China had a very poor foundation to start with and plodded along a tortuous path. Since the smashing of the "Gang of Four," especially after the Third Plenum of the Party Eleventh Central Committee, statistical undertakings have gradually been restored and there have even been some new developments. The high quality third national census and the publication of >i>The China Statistical Yearbook>/i> are both powerful evidence of this. However, the development of statistical work is now very uneven in the whole country. It cannot keep up with the progress of the situation and falls behind the need of the four modernizations program.
