On Planning and the Market

Abstract: The question of planning and the market has become a major topic of concern to economists in China and the world. The current wide-ranging discussion on this topic in China was triggered by the symposium on the law of value held in Wuxi in April 1979. In the past two years, people have expressed many new ideas and views on the relationship between planning and the market. The discussion has benefited both the theoretical and practical aspects of the question. Below, I will briefly summarize two major controversial issues over the past two years.
