Abstract: This issue of >i>The Chinese Economy>/i> not only presents important articles on the reform of China's rural economy, but it honors one of China's most outstanding students of the rural sector, Gao Xiaomeng.>sup>1>/sup> Gao Xiaomeng died in a tragic accident on February 19, 1993, at the early age of forty. During his short life, his vitality and sense of dedication were such that he was recognized throughout China, and indeed the world, as one of China's leading scholars on the rural economy.
