Abstract:
The fourteen selections translated here were published in China between November 15, 1997, and July 8, 1998. Because all but two appeared in 1998, by which time the main parameters of the "Asian financial crisis" had become clear, they should provide a reasonably accurate picture of the recommendations Chinese economists and other policy analysts were offering to Chinese government officials. Indeed, all the publications used for this issue are considered "internal" (>i>neibu>/i>) and are not generally available to the larger society. The limited exposure of such publications allows the authors to write relatively freely and to suggest strategies that might not be acceptable for dissemination in open publications.
