Orthodoxy as Pillar AND Pariah? The Ambiguous Relationship Between International Political Economy and Heterodox Economics

Abstract:
Originally, International Political Economy (IPE) provided analysis beyond orthodox economic thought, initially considered a pariah. It was a heretical project. Relying on this prejudice of dissent from mainstream economic thought, heterodox economists may be tempted today to incorporate the concepts and methods of IPE into their work. However, these concepts can actually be very close to orthodox economics, as orthodox thought has gradually made a comeback in the work of the IPE, to the point of becoming a pillar in some cases. Consequently, the use of concepts derived from IPE in heterodox economic work may be inconsistent.
