The Circular Economy Footprint on Human Development in the EU and the UK

Abstract: The circular economy has been extensively studied in the quest to find the best solutions for mitigating the vulnerabilities of economic growth, inequality, and climate change. The article aims to investigate the state of the circular economy in the EU and the UK during 2014–2019, by analyzing the impact of waste recycling (as a proxy of the circular economy) on Human Development Index (HDI). The research method is an econometric panel data analysis using twenty-eight cross-sections. The study spans over a six-year time frame between 2014–2019, considering that it defines the interval during which the circular economy has become more stringent and the coherent availability of data. The study contributes to the literature by introducing a set of variables that relate to the people-centred view of the circular economy concept. The article also adds to the existing empirical analyses by extending the research on the green economy to the entire EU plus the UK, and separately for the old EU-15 member states (+ the UK) and EU-13 new member states, respectively.
