Gururaja B L and Srikanta Parida

Journal of Economic Issues, 2025, vol. 59, issue 4, 1056-1069

Abstract: Several studies have shown that cooperatives play an important role in the socio-economic development of communities all over the world. However, none of the studies conducted so far have documented the importance of cooperatives in the informal hairdressers’ community, including that in India. Hence, the present study provides a new model called cooperative salons that addresses social, economic, competition-related, technological, locational, health-related, occupational, and financial problems; creates employment generation; and helps address the UN Sustainable Development Goal number eight related to the issue of decent work deficit. Hence, cooperatives are certainly one practical option for the formalization of the informal sector.
