Abstract:
Lifetime employment and seniority (nenko joretsu), the two major tenets of Japanese-style management, are systems that were established during Japan's growth period—so, without growth, both are destined to collapse. The seniority system is particularly fragile, in that it can never hold up without the growth of the company or the expansion of the organization.
