Abstract:
Motivated by the successive increases in the statutory penalties for copyright crime, this study presents an empirical analysis of the effects of the statutory penalty increases adopted in 2004 on the actual incidence of copyright crime,1 as compared with the incidence of robbery, using prefectural panel data from 2001 to 2006. The results show that while copyright crime was not reduced by the adoption of stricter statutory penalties in 2004, robbery was reduced.
