Diane Rosemary Elson
Japanese Economy, 2021, vol. 47, issue 1, 1-8
Abstract:
The articles in this Special Issue illuminate important dimensions of gender inequality in Japan; their relation to neoliberal policies; their implications for social reproduction; and the ways in which Japanese scholars are debating and analyzing these issues. They show that gender gaps are generally larger in Japan than in other OECD countries, and that fertility is well below replacement rate. They call for investment in democratized, decentralized and egalitarian systems of care.
